The second thing when planning is determining how big the coop has to be. There are different sizes for the different chickens that are raised. If you plan to raise chickens and birds for meat, then it needs 1.5-2 square feet per bird on the inside of the coop.

There is a space of 8-10 square feet that is needed per bird in the yard area. The next plan is the sketch and the design. This should always be done on a paper. The only thing that you need to be cautious about when coming up with the sketch and the design is making sure that the door you have is big enough for entering the coop when you want to collect or clean it. You should also put windows for ventilation.

There are things that it is not a must for you to buy, as you can improvise with the available materials around and use them to come up with the coop. If there are other materials that you find you don’t have, it is of great importance that you purchase them from the nearest stores.

Place a latch on the door so that securing can be easy. Nest boxes and perches should be installed along the walls of the coop. The entire yard should be fenced and must be six feet high. It should also be covered with netting to prevent hawks from preying on the chickens. Finally feeders and waterers should be hung in the yard for them to feed and drink.

Learn How to Make a Chicken Coop Effectively ?

build a chicken coop

Learning how to build a chicken coop is one of the easiest things as it does not require any knowledge or experience, therefore you don’t need to be an expert to do so. Not only is it easy to construct but also does not require a lot of money to buy the raw materials that will be used in the construction process. Basically the amount of timber to be used in the construction process is quite little, plus you will also need some wire mesh and nails to hold the structure together. Here is a step by step procedure to follow so as to learn how to build a chicken coop.

The first thing you need to have in mind when starting the construction is the belief that the bigger the structure is the better for you. If you think that construction of a big coop will be hard as compared to a small one, then you are wrong. Also ensure that when building the structure it should be on site and not in the workshop, as this will make your work easier. In terms of measurements, a space of about four square feet per bird is considered ideal as each chicken will have enough room. When it comes to position make sure that sunlight has enough room to enter every morning. This is important as it is believed that the chicken determine when to lay their eggs, depending on the sun. Enough sun may lead to the chicken laying up to five eggs per week.

The basic requirements that are needed include a five foot long piece of timber, some pieces of chip board, sawdust or if you prefer straw, eleven short pieces of timber, some wire mesh and finally nails and hinges.

The first step is to join the frame by screwing or joining together the short timber pieces so as to form a frame that looks like a triangle. Also make another triangle but this time, don’t complete the triangle. All that is left to do now is to join the two A-frames together using the long piece of timber. The outlook of this will be a triangular prism.

Enclose the entire chicken coop using the wire mesh and nail it in place. Make sure that you cut out the exact size of the coop to avoid wastage of raw materials.

The final stage in the construction of the chicken coop is the nesting area for the animals. This is where the chipboard comes in. The nesting area is completely covered with the chipboard. You should make it in such a way that it is easy to reach the eggs. The hinges are used to make a flap structure and this makes it easier to access the eggs that have been laid. Boxes are the best option when it comes to the nesting area. Also each nesting area for each chicken should be covered with either sawdust or straws whichever you prefer so as to make the area comfortable and warm.<
